As summer goes into full swing, we've seen blue skies and seriously hot weather. There were a few thunderstorms earlier this week, but nothing truly out of the ordinary, this being typical HK weather at this time of the year, give or take a little.
But as typhoon season approaches, will this year be different from the preceding few years? HK hasn't seen a major typhoon in a while (the last direct hit was sometime in the late 90's). However, this afternoon, a friend's status message led me to the HK Observatory website... and it looks like we are about to experience the wrath of Pabuk sometime tomorrow morning. The weather today has been particularly hazy, a sign that a typhoon is in the region. As I type this the skies have darkened considerably, and the No. 1 standby signal is in force. Typhoon directions generally tend to change overnight but this one looks a bit too close for comfort!
We'll be okay food-wise, lots of 'typhoon food' stocked up the cupboard since last month. If we get a particularly bad storm, everything might shut down. We're also sheltered in the sense that there are other buildings between us and the harbour (one of the rare advantages of NOT having an open sea view). But do pray for those living in the outlying islands and the villages, which tend to experience greater impact from the storm.
