It was Sunday afternoon.
And there was a baby shower!
Our very brief instructions were: bring a plate of something yummy and a baby shower gift (optional). Of course, it was a ladies-only event. One lady who attended confided in me that she didn't know it was a girls-only affair, for earlier in the afternoon she had asked if her husband would prefer she stayed home to look after the kids while he went for the shower instead! Her observant hubby had a feeling that perhaps, only ladies were invited? It was also quite interesting to note that most people did not know what a baby shower was; as it turned out, it was a practice common in New Zealand (where the mother-to-be is from) and in the US. Someone's husband thought the girls were getting together for a shower (!!!!?!!!!).
Anyway we had quite a fair bit to eat before we got started on the games. For the first game, we were each given a length of toilet paper and were asked to estimate the number of segments of toilet paper equivalent to the circumference of Anna's (mom-to-be) tummy! i.e. how many pieces does it take to go one complete round? I tore off 12 pieces, and the actual measurement, mortifyingly enough, was only 9 1/2 pieces. Shy...
Another game we played consisted of tasting various bits of anonymously-flavoured baby food. From the collective grimaces observed during this segment, one wonders why anyone would feed them to a poor baby. Some of them (spinach and something) were quite repulsive. Even the mom-to-be was squirming after tasting the dirty-green gooey paste. There were six flavours to try out, and to make matters worse, the flavours were usually combined, i.e. you won't get purely apple-flavoured baby food, it would be apple and pear; or pumpkin and carrot, and so on. The one which took the cake was rice pudding. Now how...!?
We ended the games session with some embarrassing charades, fortunately there were no men around to bear witness.
Baby shower ended with mom-to-be opening all her pressies... hehe, the oohs! and ahhs! :)
